The atmosphere in the tennis hall this Saturday afternoon is cozy and everyone is friendly. Aleksandar Goshev picks up the ball, throws it in the air and does the first serve. He focuses only on the game itself and does not worry about anything else while he is playing. “I tell myself after every point to keep fighting until the match is over.” It is the thing that makes him extremely happy and focused on the goals he has.

The 21-year-old from Blagoevgrad was only 18 when he ranked in the top 20 in Bulgaria for tennis. He becomes more lively when he steps on the court and plays the game with grace. However, there are some difficulties that he faces but tries to overcome anything on his way and stays as positive as he can even when he lost a match. “Sometimes it is hard to stay strong, both physically and mentally. But I always try to overcome any difficulties that I face.”

He has participated in more than fifty tournaments, but unfortunately, Bulgaria cannot give him the opportunity needed for going professional at the international level, he says.

Aleksandar currently lives in Sofia. He does many different things, combining tennis with traveling and full-time study. “I study architectural construction and geodesy at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Geodesy.” Since he was in High School, he has been interested in Geodesy and felt that he had a better chance for a future career in this field than in tennis. “After all, sports are time-consuming and bring injuries.”

He thinks that tennis is a different sport than it used to be. It is very likely for the average tennis player to have a longer career now. Everyone seems to be peaking in their early thirties as opposed to their early twenties.“ Everything is about how you use your body in the game, but if you know how to take care of your body and use it well, your career will be longer. An example would be Roger Federer — he is thirty-eight years old and is in the big three.”

He plays with passion and thinks that a good player can always have a career as a coach in case he or she doesn’t make it as a player. “There is the option of being a professional player and making an income that way, otherwise, you can be a coach.”
